Help Eliminate Extreme Poverty

28 Apr

How much do you spend annually on Christmas presents for your friends and family?

How much do your friends and family spend on you?

Did you know that North Americans spend more that $1 trillion dollars annually on Christmas. Just imagine if we all redirected some of that money towards development projects in the third world?

Please take a few minutes to watch my friend Jay Baydala’s video and consider how you might get involved. You REALLY can help change the world.

Its not a question of everyone changing. The pilot project at one junior high school raised $11,000. How many junior highs are there in the world? What is 1% of $1 trillion dollars? $10 billion. Redirecting 1% of Christmas spending to the third world would result in $10 billion towards ending extreme poverty. Obviously it is a massive goal, but the world never changes if we don’t dream big.

I wish more folks thought of others as they think of their loved ones… so much in America is about overwhelming size and excess.

I just watched Jay’s invitation video for Christmas
Future. It gave me goosebumps. I too have been overwhelmed and disheartened by the waste and expense of Christmas…..one of the major seasons for the increase of stress and depression. Buying items for people who don’t need or sometimes even want the gift.
The gift then finds a home in the back of some closet or the bottom of a drawer. Coming out only when there is a chance to re-gift to someone else or find a new home at the Salvation Army or garage sale. Some new items even find their new home is the local landfill. What a waste! This past Christmas 2007 my family went to Florida and California not just to take a well deserved holiday but to try to avoid Christmas. We asked our family NOT to buy us gifts and we would do the same. We did not have a turkey or a gift at Christmas and what a wonderful day it was. Walking along the beach on Christmas Day. Incredible. And…although our family sponsors 2 children and their families in Africa already, I now see we can do more. Diverting the commericialism of Christmas rather than trying to avoid it sounds like a wonderful venture indeed. Count me in! Let me know besides the donation I plan to make if I can help out in any way.

Why do we feel the need to get caught up in all the hoopla of christmas. For the last several years I have decided to make a conscious decision to use the holiday season as a time to recharge, rest and recuperate. To spend quite, meaningful time with my family and get away from all the commercialization of the christmas.

I take a majority of the money I would have spent buying meaningless, useless items for ungrateful people I see once a year and I donate it to worthy charities.

I have to say, I enjoye the holidays more than ever!
