About Casey Woods

I graduated from the University of Alberta in 1995 with a Bachelor of Science Honors degree in Geography. Most of my studies were geared towards GIS and digital remote sensing as I’d always been a bit of a computer geek. Upon graduation I quickly got a job in Calgary testing GIS software for the oil industry. It didn’t take long for me to decide that the IT and networking guys at the company had a better job than I did! After a quick layoff (i.e. dose of reality!) I decided to get Microsoft certified which then led to Lotus Notes certification.

After a few quick stops in the Calgary oil patch doing Lotus Notes admin and development, I ended up at SHL Systemhouse which was owned by WorldCom (at the time). Yes, that WorldCom. Anyway, SHL was a great job because I got to learn all kinds of neat technical (and political!) stuff and spend a great deal of time in Fluor Daniel’s offices across the US and Canada. All good things must come to an end, and so did SHL’s contract with Flour Daniel and my employment at SHL.

It was now 1999 and after a couple of contracting stops I ended up at Harbor Systems which had just been taken over by Beta System AG, went on to become Tantia Technologies, and is now Beta Systems AG again. To this point, I had dabbled with web pages and had messed around with Lotus Domino, but it was here that I would really get into the web, networking, and Linux. My time at Tantia lasted until just after the great tech crash of 2001 and then 90% of us had to go find another job…

Since then I’ve been an independent consultant focusing on PHP/MySQL database applications, Open Source software solutions (e.g. WordPress, Joomla, Drupal, etc.), networking, Linux, FreeBSD, Mac OS X, SEO and XHTML/CSS standards based web development. Not necessarily in that order. I’ve installed my share of Windows 2003 servers, and have setup several Windows networks, but I wouldn’t count myself a Windows guy (or fan!).

I’m the kind of person who doesn’t deal well with monotony so I like to keep my fingers in a wide range of projects and technologies. I guess you could say that I’m a jack-of-all-trades and a master-of-none? I kind of think that’s a good thing because it means I have a pretty balanced view of the IT world. It also means that my clients can always count on me bringing a fresh perspective to the table!

When I’m not working I like hanging out with my wife and three kids and the dog. Preferred free time hobbies include skiing (alpine and telemark), Salmon fishing, fly fishing, and spending time on the water around Vancouver Island.
