Why the High School Baseball Postseason Just Got Chaotic in the Southern Section

If you think you know how high school baseball playoffs work, the CIF Southern Section just threw a massive curveball. The old days of simple single-elimination brackets in Division 1 are gone. Friday's chaotic second round of pool play proved exactly why this new format forces teams to change their entire approach to postseason pitching and strategy.

Instead of surviving and advancing, the top 16 teams are battling in four distinct pools. Four powerhouse programs took total control on Friday, securing automatic berths to the May 22 quarterfinals. Everyone else? They're either heading home or staring down a brutal elimination match on Tuesday.

Powerhouses Punch Ticket to Quarterfinals

The biggest statement of the day came in Pool A, where eighth-seeded Sherman Oaks Notre Dame pulled off a definitive 4-0 shutout against top-seeded Norco. It's a massive result that shakes up the top of the board and sends Norco down to a dangerous elimination scenario next week.

Over in Pool B, Harvard-Westlake barely escaped a fierce battle against Huntington Beach, grinding out a 6-5 win. James Tronstein stayed red-hot for the Wolverines, going 3-for-3 and blasting his 10th home run of the season.

Pool C saw St. John Bosco squeeze past Sierra Canyon with a tight 4-3 victory, while Pool D saw Orange Lutheran handle business in a 9-6 offensive showcase against Corona.

Notre Dame, Harvard-Westlake, St. John Bosco, and Orange Lutheran all wrapped up Friday with a perfect 2-0 record in pool play. Because they won their respective pods, they get to skip the midweek drama and rest up for the quarterfinals on May 22.

Elimination Tuesday Details

For the teams that split their first two games, the margin for error is officially zero. The 1-1 squads face off on Tuesday, May 19, in a winner-take-all battle to determine who gets those remaining four quarterfinal spots.

The elimination matchups are locked in based on Friday's results:

  • Norco hosts Ayala in Pool A. Ayala kept their season alive with a wild 7-6 win over Maranatha.
  • Corona plays at Corona Santiago in Pool D. Santiago looked sharp in an 8-4 win over Etiwanda.
  • Cypress hosts Sierra Canyon in Pool C. Cypress dominated Oaks Christian 8-2 to earn this chance.
  • La Mirada welcomes Huntington Beach in Pool B. La Mirada earned their spot by handling Temecula Valley 9-2.

The stakes couldn't be higher. Win and you move on to face one of the rested pool winners on Friday. Lose and your season ends on a random Tuesday afternoon. Meanwhile, Maranatha, Etiwanda, Oaks Christian, and Temecula Valley all fell to 0-2 and were eliminated from postseason contention.

Chaos in the Lower Divisions

While Division 1 sorted out its pool play, the rest of the Southern Section played high-stakes, single-elimination games.

In Division 3, Dos Pueblos put on an absolute clinic against Burbank Burroughs, walking away with a 14-8 victory. The real story was the second inning. Dos Pueblos exploded for nine runs, highlighted by a massive grand slam from Nick Salcido, who ended the frame with five RBIs. They'll head to Huntington Beach to face Edison on Tuesday.

Edison advanced by taking down Damien 1-1, while Mira Costa outlasted Arlington 8-6. Redondo Union also moved forward with a thrilling 8-7 win over Ridgecrest Burroughs.

Division 5 saw plenty of drama too. Long Beach Poly found a way to survive a tight 3-2 battle against Sunny Hills at Cabrillo High School. A gutsy mound performance from varsity newcomer Malakai Pruitt kept the Lancers at bay, supported by two crucial home runs from the Jackrabbit offense. Poly moves on to face Cathedral, who beat Calvary Baptist 4-2.

Santa Barbara also advanced in Division 5, scoring all their runs in the very first inning to edge out Loara 5-4. Milo Winckler delivered the decisive blow with a two-run double. The Dons will host Paramount on Tuesday, after Paramount completely dismantled Heritage Christian 15-1.

Down in Division 7, Carpinteria pulled off a gritty 2-1 comeback against Flintridge Prep. Gabe Martinez came through with a clutch, two-run single in the top of the sixth inning to flip the game. Carpinteria now draws a tough second-round matchup at home against top-seeded New Roads, who edged out Palmdale 5-4.

Fontana also survived a wild, high-scoring affair, beating Milken 13-12, while Patriot took care of Viewpoint 11-10.

Upcoming Playoff Schedule

Tuesday, May 19 is going to be a massive day across Southern California. Beyond the crucial Division 1 elimination games, the other divisions move into their next rounds.

In Division 2, Elsinore travel to Santa Margarita for an early 2:30 p.m. start. South Hills plays at Ganesha, Newport Harbor visits Great Oak, and Servite heads to Foothill.

The Division 3 slate features a massive local rivalry match as Mira Costa visits Redondo Union. Palos Verdes heads to Warren, and Corona del Mar travels to Fullerton after a tight 2-1 win over Bishop Amat.

For Division 5, Quartz Hill will travel to Kaiser after a dominant 12-0 shutout of Tahquitz. St. Bonaventure hits the road to play Culver City, and Long Beach Wilson travels to Jurupa Hills.

If you are following a specific team, check local school athletic departments for exact afternoon start times, as field conditions and travel requirements can shift schedules by 30 to 60 minutes. Get your tickets early through the digital portal, make sure your pitching rotation is locked down, and get ready for a wild week of high school baseball.
